General Medicine

Department Information

The majority of the clinical work for General Internal Medicine (GIM) lies with the acute inpatients. These patients are from the unselected take who are admitted via the Acute Medical Units in Ninewells and Perth Royal Infirmary.
Ninewells (Dundee) – Inpatients are on Ward 4 and we operate a locality cluster model (see document for clusters), with senior doctors responsible for each cluster. Patients from Angus or NE Fife typically would be an inpatient in Ninewells.
Perth Royal Infirmary (PRI) - Inpatients are on wards 3 or 6.

We look after a variety of clinical conditions; multi-morbidity, alcohol and substance misuse, frailty and those with undifferentiated illness, including malignancy.

Outpatient clinics: There are no formal GIM clinics to refer to and patients should be referred to alternative specialty clinics. Written advice may be offered electronically via the SCI-Gateway advice request option for general medicine.

Regular clinics:
  • DVT service
  • Cardiovascular Risk Clinic (complex hypertension or difficult to control familial hypercholesterolaemia)
As with many other services, some clinics may be held virtually via telephone or Near Me consultation.
