Specialty Description

A comprehensive Oral Surgery specialist level clinical service is provided within Dundee Dental Hospital & School.

Patients attending staff clinics should be aware that as part of a teaching hospital, students are often present on clinics in an observational capacity.

Whilst patients are awaiting or undergoing treatment within the Dental Hospital they are expected to remain under the care of their General Dental Practitioner (GDP) for routine and emergency dental care

Our Team

Oral Surgery operates with a highly skilled team located on the first floor of the building. The team is led by both NHS and Academic Consultants and supported by Specialty Dentists, Specialist and Dental Core Trainees. Undergraduate Students also regularly attend clinic and treatment sessions within the department

Who to refer

Telephone/Urgent Referrals for Oral Surgery
• Persistent post-operative bleeding:

Refer urgently/as an emergency following a telephone conversation:
- 08.30 to 16.30: Contact the Oral Surgery Team on: 01382 425791
- Out of Hours: Contact the Oral and Maxillofacial Team at Ninewells: 01382 660111

• Large fascial space infections:
- Refer to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Ninewells: 01382 660111

Who not to refer

Referrals not accepted to oral surgery:
Suspicion of Oral Malignancy should follow/be referred as per ‘Urgent Referral Guidelines’ to the local Oral and Maxillofacial Department.

How to refer

SCI Gateway should be used for making referrals and be aware that your patient may be offered a virtual appointment as appropriate

Patient Journey

Referral Process:
On receiving a complete referral, a senior member of clinical staff triages this according to the nature of the case described in the referral. Referrals not meeting the referral criteria or with insufficient information to allow triaging will be returned and the reason explained. Referrals suitable for assessment by a specialist will be allocated a new patient appointment within 12 weeks when possible. Acceptance for consultation does not mean that a patient will be accepted for some or all of their treatment. Please note that cases which appear routine in nature may be booked onto a student clinic.

The Initial consultation/ assessment appointment
Patients attending for a new patient assessment should not expect treatment at that appointment. The first appointment allows relevant information to be gathered, a dental examination and possible investigations to be carried out. If further appointments are required, the member of staff will advise.

Failure to attend
If a patient fails to attend for an appointment on either a staff or student clinic they are likely to be discharged and require re-referral.
