Orthodontics

Specialty Description

A comprehensive Orthodontics specialist level clinical service is provided within Dundee Dental Hospital & School. In addition, there are outreach clinics held at Perth Royal Infirmary and Springfield Medical Centre (Arbroath).

Patients attending staff clinics should be aware that as part of a teaching hospital, students are often present on clinics in an observational capacity.

Whilst patients are awaiting or undergoing treatment within the Dental Hospital they are expected to remain under the care of their General Dental Practitioner (GDP) for routine and emergency dental care.

Our Team

Orthodontics operates with a highly skilled team located on the fifth floor of the Dental Hospital with Orthodontics clinics being held within Outpatients at Perth Royal Infirmary and within the PDS clinic at Springfield Medical Centre (Arboath). The team is led by both NHS and Academic Consultants supported by Specialty Dentists and Specialist Registrars. Undergraduate Students also regularly attend clinic and treatment sessions.

Who to refer

Initial Consultation
All patients referred to the Orthodontic Department at Dundee Dental Hospital & School and Perth Royal Infirmary are offered an initial consultation with a Consultant (or his/her deputy). New patients are not routinely seen at Springfield Medical Centre (Arboath).
This is regardless of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC) Score or the Severity of the Malocclusion as diagnosed by the referring practitioner.

Patient Journey

Referral Process:
On receiving a complete referral, a senior member of clinical staff triages this according to the nature of the case described in the referral. Referrals not meeting the referral criteria or with insufficient information to allow triaging will be returned and the reason explained. Referrals suitable for assessment by a specialist will be allocated a new patient appointment within 12 weeks when possible. Acceptance for consultation does not mean that a patient will be accepted for some or all of their treatment.

The Initial consultation/ assessment appointment
Patients attending for a new patient assessment should not expect treatment at that appointment. The first appointment allows relevant information to be gathered, a dental examination and possible investigations to be carried out. If further appointments are required, the member of staff will advise.

Failure to attend
If a patient fails to attend for an appointment on either a staff or student clinic they are likely to be discharged and require re-referral.
