Who/ how to Refer
Emergency - if any concern of sepsis or Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Non-emergency - suspected retained tampon but no sepsis suspicion of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
- Refer immediately to AMU or A&E.
Non-emergency - suspected retained tampon but no sepsis suspicion of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
- Ideally same day review . To be seen by clinician with experience in speculum examination.
- If triaged in out-of-hours setting- and no sepsis suspected - consider next day review with patient’s own GP practice.
- If unable to remove object in primary care, to refer same day to either Gynaecology or Sexual and Reproductive Heath.
- Antibiotics are not normally recommended.
