Retained Tampon

Tampon or other lost intravaginal object, retained for >8 hours. 

Who/ how to Refer 

Emergency - if any concern of sepsis or Toxic Shock Syndrome.
  • Refer immediately to AMU or A&E.

Non-emergency - suspected retained tampon but no sepsis suspicion of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
  • Ideally same day review . To be seen by clinician with experience in speculum examination.
  • If triaged in out-of-hours setting- and no sepsis suspected - consider next day review with patient’s own GP practice.
  • If unable to remove object in primary care, to refer same day to either Gynaecology or Sexual and Reproductive Heath.
  • Antibiotics are not normally recommended.
