Patient Assessment & Liaison Mental Health Service (PALMS) PALMS is available within GP practices across Dundee. This service can be accessed only by patients registered with the GP practice where the service is available. This service provides patients with the option of being seen and assessed by a mental health specialist to determine where their needs are best placed. People will receive a one-off thirty-minute appointment for a triage assessment with a mental health specialist / clinician who can give information about mental health coping strategies, self-help materials, signpost to local community supports, or where appropriate, refer to specialist services.

Who to Refer

The service is for people aged 16 or over (who are no longer at school) who are requiring mental health support or advice. Individuals might be struggling with low mood, anxiety, self-esteem, distressing life events or other difficulties that they would like help with or guidance on.
  • Individuals aged 16-17 who are enrolled in school education
  • Individuals who are currently seeing/speaking to a mental health professional (e.g. psychologist, counsellor, mental health nurse, or psychiatrist)
  • Individuals seeking MED3 or medication
  • Individuals who are open to mental health services (e.g. Community Mental Health Teams, Tayside / Dundee Drug and Alcohol Recovery Service and other)
  • Individuals who are presenting in crisis or have active suicidal ideations
  • Where main concern regarding presentation is associated with dementia

How to Refer

This is a self-referral service – patients can book directly in via their registered practice reception. Reception staff should follow care navigation consisting of the above eligibility criteria to ensure of appropriate patients being booked in.
