NHS Tayside's Role as an Anchor Organisation

What is Anchor Organisation
NHS Tayside is an Anchor Organisation. These pages contain information on what this means and how NHS Tayside can use its anchor status to tackle inequality and improve the lives of people in the communities it serves.

Anchor organisations are large organisations that have a major presence and impact in their local area. They employ a large number of people, spend a lot on goods and services, and have multiple buildings, land and other assets. They are the key ‘agents’ in delivering on the NHS’s community wealth building agenda.

Anchor organisations can make decisions which could help reduce poverty and inequalities and significantly improve the lives of people living within their local communities.

These decisions can increase access to Fair Work opportunities for local people, use their purchasing power to buy local goods and services which can positively impact community wealth. Outdoor spaces and under-utilised buildings owned by Anchor institutions can be used for community benefit. Looking at ways to reduce emissions and improve sustainability can have a positive environmental impact which will benefit the local community and the wider population. Working with local partner organisations can amplify the impact of all these factors.
