Information for Patients and Visitors

The Department of Neurosurgery at Ninewells Hospital cares for both emergency admissions and planned elective patients. We try to give all our patients and visitors a warm and friendly welcome. To help you prepare for your visit, we have put together some information that you may find helpful.

Where can I find out more information about my diagnosis?

Please visit our Conditions page to find out more about common neurosurgical problems that we treat in Dundee.

Tests and Investigations

Please see our investigations page for information about the various common neurosurgical tests or investigations you may need to undergo.

What should I bring with me?

Who will be involved in caring for me or my relative?

The Neurosurgical team is composed of Doctors, Nurses and many other Allied Health Professionals who all play a role in providing the best and most appropriate care at each stage of your journey.

When can I visit?

We welcome and value visitors to our ward and believe that we should all be seen as partners in the care of our patients.

Ward 23B (including the HDU) believe in a flexible approach to visiting and although there is no strict visiting time policy we ask that consideration is given in the morning, when direct patient care is being given to protect patient privacy and dignity, during the medical ward rounds and at nursing handover to maintain patient confidentiality and also at protected mealtimes to ensure unnecessary interruptions and provide a peaceful environment for all patients to eat.

We ask that a maximum of two visitors per bed is adhered to.  Visitors may be asked to vacate at times when clinical activity takes precedence. For patients in the Intensive Care Unit please arrange your visit with the staff on the unit.

New Developments

Our department constantly works on behalf of our patients to improve services in order to provide the best possible streamlined care. We introduced post operative telephone consulations for patients undergoing elective spinal surgery, a successful service allowing post up follow up, 4 weeks following surgery rather than a 6 week wait to be seen in clinic. This allows for monitoring of symptoms, a timely implementation of ongoing care needs and reduced need for you to attend clinic with all the stresses that this can cause. Your telephone follow up will be conducted by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Neurosurgery.

We also offer a telephone follow up consultation - 2 weeks post discharge, for patients who have had a subarachnoid haemorrhage and treatment for this condition. This allows us to monitor your progress and mood level following such an event.  Your telephone follow up will be conducted by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Neurosurgery.

Our Neurosurgical Clinics are attended by different members of the Neurosurgical team including: Neurosurgical Consultatant; Specialist Registrar and the Advanced Nurse Practitioner for Neurosurgery. To ensure timely care and clinic consultations for all patients, please be aware, you may be seen by any of these team members.
