Spey Ward

Spey Ward is an 8 bedded medium secure admission ward for men and mainly admits patients from the North of Scotland but does admit patients who live in other parts of the country. The ward can admit patients on any day of the week but we try and let you know when a new patient is being admitted.

The ward has rules which we expect you to be aware and respectful of. The rules are in place to ensure that the ward environment can be as safe and therapeutic as possible.

As a staff team we will work with you and are respectful, hopeful and consistent in our approach to your care. We ask that you work with us, engage actively in your care and be respectful of us and our roles.

The ward address is Spey Ward, Rohallion Secure Care Clinic, Murray Royal Hospital, Perth, PH2 7BH.

The ward telephone number is 01738 414475.

Ward Team

The Spey Ward Team consists of a wide range of staff and includes Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Doctors, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapist Assistants, Psychologists, Social Workers and House Keepers. You will meet all of us in your first few weeks and we will always try to introduce ourselves and tell you what our role is within the team. There is also a Physiotherapist, Dietician and GP available.

Primary Nurse

You will meet your Primary Nurse early in your admission and he/she will have a key role in getting to know you and developing your assessment and care plans. We encourage you to meet regularly with your Primary Nurse and participate actively in your assessment, care planning and treatment.

Bedroom Areas

You have your own room with an en suite and have the ability to access your room at different times during day.

Monday to Friday you can access your bedroom until 10:00, the bedroom corridor is then closed up until 13:00 when it is reopened until 15:00. The corridor is then closed again until 18:00 when it is reopened until 10:00 the next morning. We ask that you stick with these times and be ready to leave your room at the agreed times. At the weekend the bedroom corridor is locked between 12:00 and 13:00 and 17:00 and 18:00.

Your bedside cabinet locks and you will, when agreed by the MDT, be given a key for your cabinet. We ask that you keep your toiletries and any items you would like keep safe in your bedside cabinet. Staff have a key for your cabinet as well which can be used if you lose your key or in particular circumstances. Money and bank cards will be kept in the ward safe for you.

A staff member is always in the bedroom corridor when it is open and we ask that you do not enter other patient’s bedrooms.

Random room searches are carried out on at least a weekly basis, we also carry out searches in response to a particular concern or incident on the ward. We understand that this may feel intrusive but staff will always carry out the search in line with the Searching Patients their Belongings and Environment Policy. During the room search, staff will remove bedding and leave fresh linen.

There is a limit to the amount of possessions you can have in your room and staff will explain this to you. We ask that you keep your room tidy and in a condition where the Ward Housekeeper can clean your room.

When leaving your bedroom please make sure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear in the main ward area.

Smoking

Rohallion Clinic is a smoke free environment. You can purchase ‘single use’ only vapes which you are permitted to use in outdoor areas only. If you want to help to give up smoking please speak to your doctor about nicotine replacement which may help you.

Shopping

There are two vending machines in the clinic where you can buy drinks and snacks. Also each ward has a weekly shop where staff are able to purchase items you may need.

Online shopping is possible if you have your own bank card and if computer access is agreed by the clinical team.

Ward Based Activities

We have a variety of activities that you can do in the ward.

• The day area has a TV and X Box
• Pool Table in the pool room which is accessible up until 23:00 each day
• Table tennis
• Various board games (in the cupboards in the day area)
• We can arrange for you to cook in the Therapy Kitchen

It is very important that you have meaningful activity on the ward and we work hard as a team to provide you with a range of different activities and therapeutic opportunities. Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapist Assistants are part of the Spey Ward Team and they will come and speak with you about hobbies or interests you may have and over time develop an individual activity programme for you. This may include the use of the facilities in SCAPA. SCAPA is the main off ward OT area and has a music room, workshop, gym, games hall, kitchen, cafe and a range of activities available.

Visitors

There is a set process in place to arrange visits and staff will speak to you about this as all visitors have to be agreed by the multidisciplinary team.

All visits must be arranged in advance and your visit will always be supervised by a staff member. The level of supervision will be dependent on you and where you are in your recovery. Visits can happen on any day of the week between 10:00 and 19:00, out-with protected meal times of 12:00-13:00 and 17:00 and 18:00.

Restricted Items

Contraband items are not allowed in the unit. Restricted items are allowed but with specific supervision/arrangements in place to support there use. Please speak to a staff member about this.
