After your visit

Before discharge

Before you are discharged you will be given information about your child's operation or procedure and advice on how to care for then once you are home.

Post operation leaflets and contact telephone numbers will be provided on the day. These leaflets will provide information around your child's operation or procedure. We will also provide you with information on administering pain relief to ensure your child remains comfortable.

We recommend having a supply of Paracetamol and Ibuprofen at home. Should your child require additional medication we will supply this on the day.

Day of surgery

On the day of surgery, the surgeon may request a wound review after discharge. In most cases, this can be provided by our community nursing team. The nurse who has been looking after you will arrange this with the team. The appointment will either be given to you on the day or by our community nursing team who will contact you with a date and time.

After discharge

After your discharge we are still here to offer you support and advice. We offer all families open access to the surgical ward for 24 hours after discharge home. The paediatric surgical ward is a day surgery unit and we are open between the hours of 8am and 8pm - outwith these hours our colleagues on the children's ward (ward 29) will be happy to help.
