Can I be there when my child has their anaesthetic?

Yes, you can stay with your child in the anaesthetic room until they are asleep.

Will my child be put to sleep with gas or a cannula?

Your anaesthetist will discuss all of these options with you on the day. All anxieties will be taken in to consideration, and a decision will be made with your anaesthetist.

Can I be there when my child wakes up?

Once your child is awake, they will be brought to the ward. Sometimes children wake up very quickly after anaesthetic so may wake up in the recovery room with the anaesthetic nurse and anaesthetist. Others take a little longer but either is normal. After the operation we will bring your child back to you as quick as we can.

Can both parents attend on the day of surgery?

We can accommodate two parents / guardians / carers to attend with the child. The team will update you with further details during your pre-admission phone call.

Will my child be kept in overnight?

Most of our children are day cases, however you will be informed if an overnight stay is required. We do advise parents however to bring an overnight bag just in case. One parent is able to stay with their child overnight. If you child requires an overnight stay after surgery, due to the surgical unit being a day case area, you and your child will be transferred to the children's ward (ward 29) overnight.

When can they go back to school?

This depends on what procedure they have had done and the recovery time. Your consultant will advise you on the day.

When can normal activity resume?

This would also be on the advice of your consultant.

What will my child be like after their operation and when will they be discharged?

Every child is unique and recovery time can vary. The average time from returning to the ward to discharge ranges from 2-6 hours depending on how quickly your child recovers.

When will I find out the results of my child's scan?

Results are usually available 2-3 weeks later and will be discussed at your next clinic appointment.

Do I still need two parents in the car to take my child home?

Following a period of observation, if you are comfortable with your child it is fine to travel home in the car with one parent / guardian - our advice is to avoid travel on public transport if possible.
