Background

In the last 15 years, there has been a growing interest and commitment to supporting people with health issues into or in employment. The importance of being in work, or in gainful occupation, for sustaining good health has been comprehensively described and is now well recognised nationally.

Working Health Services Tayside is a Vocational Rehabilitation service first established in February 2008. This was in response to recommendations made linking good work to health improvement by Dame Carol Black in her review “Working for a Healthier Tomorrow”. She recognised that early intervention could prevent ill-health from causing absence, or short-term absence becoming long-term or ultimately worklessness. She proposed a multidisciplinary case managed approach to early assessment and management of employees’ health. Hence, pilot sites in Dundee, Lothian and Borders were established. The decision was to target those working for small to medium-sized business or for people who were self-employed, as it was recognised that these employees would not have the same access to Occupational Health that larger companies may provide.

As the projects delivered excellent outcomes, the service was expanded in 2010 to cover the whole of Tayside, and at the same time, projects were set up in Health Boards throughout Scotland.

The Tayside team is based within Kings Cross Health & Community Care Centre in Dundee. Appointments can also be arranged throughout Tayside including Perth Royal Infirmary, Arbroath Infirmary, to your workplace and even your home if this meets your needs.

A more recent independent review by Glasgow University and the Scottish Government has again demonstrated the value of the service. Early interventions were able to improve health outcomes as well as effectively support service users to remain in or return to the workplace, all with high satisfaction in how the service was delivered. The Scottish Government is, therefore, committed to continuing the Working Health Services projects, enabling us to continue our contribution to achieving the goal of a healthy workforce throughout Scotland.
