Mrs Lorna Birse-Stewart was appointed as Substantive Chair of NHS Tayside in October 2020.

Mrs Birse-Stewart was appointed to Tayside NHS Board as a Non-Executive Member in April 2018, and she was subsequently appointed as Vice Chair in October 2018 and as Interim Chair in July 2019.

Mrs Birse-Stewart brings a wealth of experience to Tayside NHS Board having over 35 years’ experience working across health and third sector organisations through which she has developed leadership skills with a strong emphasis on people, values and personal interactions as an essential component of achieving change and the delivery of excellence.

Mrs Birse-Stewart also has a strong governance and financial oversight track record, providing leadership of Tayside NHS Board as Chair since 2020 and recently throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Mrs Birse-Stewart was appointed Chair of the National Board Chairs Improving Population Health Group (BCG IPHG) in 2021.
Brought up and resident in Perthshire, Mrs Birse-Stewart has an understanding of health provision and services in rural communities, including care for the elderly. Her career history includes extensive work in the charitable sector with a special interest in paediatrics and research having been involved with Action Medical Research “Saving Tiny Lives” campaign in Scotland, St Thomas’s Hospital Baby Fund, London, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Mrs Birse-Stewart has seven years previous experience within the NHS as a Director of the Royal West Sussex Trust where she held Non-Executive responsibility for A&E and as a member of NHS independent review panels.
