Coming to CAMHS for the first time can feel like a big step, and it is natural for young people and their families to have questions about what to expect. Before their first appointment, we want everyone to feel as informed, comfortable and supported as possible. To help with this, we have developed a leaflet that explains what CAMHS is, what happens during an initial treatment appointment, and how young people and families can prepare in advance.
The leaflet has been designed to give a clear and simple introduction to our service. It helps to give a sense of what the environment feels like, so there are fewer unknowns on the day.
We have included information about who you might meet and highlighted that this is a space for young people to talk and feel listened to and understood. The leaflet also encourages young people to think about what or who they might want to bring with them and offers prompts to help them reflect on what they might want to share with their clinician.
We encourage all young people and families to read the leaflet before their appointment so they know what to expect and can feel ready for the conversation ahead. Our aim is to help young people and families to begin their journey with the information and support they need.
