What are the most common reasons for a referral not being accepted?

There are several reasons why a referral may not be accepted into CAMHS. These should have been outlined in the letter you received. In general, referrals are not accepted when the criteria for CAMHS are not met or when a child or young person’s needs can be more appropriately supported by another service.
CAMHS provides specialist assessment and treatment, and there are times when a referral is not appropriate or when other interventions should be tried first. A decision not to accept a referral does not mean the young person’s difficulties are not valid or that support is not needed.
A range of local and national services are available for further guidance and support. Please see our Things to Try page for recommended options.
