Green Renal Programme
Green Renal programmes introduced to cut carbon emissions
NHS Tayside has introduced the Green Endoscopy and Green Renal Programmes – building on the success of the National Green Theatres Programme, which has shown that reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare can be achieved safely while maintaining high standards of patient care.
The National Green Renal Programme aims to reduce the environmental impact of delivering renal care, particularly in-centre haemodialysis as a treatment associated with disproportionately high green house gas emissions.
The renal teams across Ninewells, PRI and Arbroath Infirmary worked together to complete the dialysate switchover, which is when dialysis units move to a different way of providing dialysis fluid that still cleans the blood effectively but uses fewer resources and produces less waste, helping make dialysis more environmentally friendly.
