What is an X-Ray Examination?

An x-ray is an image of a body part.  X-ray examinations use electromagnetic radiation to make images of your bones, teeth and internal organs.  It is a fast, easy and painless examination that allows doctors to quickly diagnose conditions like broken bones or even pneumonia.

Safety Information

X-rays expose patients to some amount of radiation.  If you have any questions regarding this please ask your radiologist or doctor.  Women should inform their doctors of any possibility of being pregnant before a scan is carried out.  You may also be asked to remove jewellery, spectacles and any metal objects or clothing that might interfere with the x-ray images.  Any valuables can be taken into the examination room with you because there is not secure storage available.

Procedure

The radiographer or radiologist will explain the examination before he or she starts.  You will be positioned for the examination.  This may involve you standing, sitting or lying down on a table.  You will be asked to stay still and may be required to hold your breath for a few seconds.  X-rays will be taken of the area requested by the doctor.  You should expect to be in the department for about 15 minutes.  You will be told when you may leave the department.

Results

The results of the general x-ray will be sent to the person who referred you within 2 weeks.  If it was your GP, please contact your own doctor's surgery.
