Colorectal cancer (CRC), also known as bowel cancer and colon cancer, is the development of cancer from the colon or rectum (parts of the large intestine). Bowel cancer can start in the large bowel (colon) or the back passage (rectum). It is also divided into different types of cancer depending on the type of cell that your cancer started in. Risk factors for cancer of the colon and rectum include having a history of colonic polyps, long-standing inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis / Crohn's disease and a genetic family history. Most colorectal cancers develop from polyps. Removal of colonic polyps can prevent colorectal cancer. Colonic polyps and early colon cancer can have no symptoms therefore, regular screening is important. Bowel Screening in Scotland starts at age 50 until age 74. You are invited to participate every two years.
If your symptoms suggest a colorectal cancer or the diagnosis is uncertain you will be referred to the hospital for investigations. There are a range of investigations for colorectal cancer and the diagnosis is usually confirmed by a special x-ray or telescope test – CT scan, MRI, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, CT Colonography. Awaiting results can be an extremely worrying time and where there is a suspicion of a colorectal cancer you will be introduced to the Colorectal Nurse Specialist Team.
