Bowel Screening
Role of the Nurse Specialist and the Scottish Bowel Screening Programme - https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/screening/bowel-screening/introduction-to-bowel-screening
If you have received a letter asking you to contact the hospital regarding your result you will speak with one of the secretarial staff who will take your name and contact details. The secretary will then notify the Colorectal Nursing Team.
One of the Colorectal Nurses will contact you on the number you provide and discuss further the reason for colonoscopy. The nurse will then ask a number of health related questions in order to assess your fitness for the procedure and to ensure it is the correct investigation for you. It is very important to be honest with your answers.
If the nurse thinks a colonoscopy is appropriate they will explain to you the ‘next steps’ (they have no influence over appointment times) and discuss with you the importance of being properly prepared for the procedure.
Due to the COVID pandemic you may require to have a COVID swab 48 hours prior to your appointment and then self isolate until your appointment; the Endoscopy Team will make the arrangements for your swab test.
The results of your colonoscopy will be discussed with you at the time and if any samples have been taken you will be notified of the results by letter thereafter. Following your colonoscopy you may meet with one of the Specialist Nurses if it is felt you need to undergo further investigation.
