Oral Medicine

Oral medicine is concerned with the non-surgical management of conditions which affect the oral mucosa (lining of the mouth).  It focuses on the diagnosis and management of mainly chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the mouth.  The department also treats patients who present with chronic pain in the head and neck region.

Patients are referred to the specialist led service by their general dental or medical practitioners. Following referral, patients attend for a consultation where they are assessed and investigations undertaken.

Once a diagnosis is made patients are provided with advice and treatment. Many of the conditions managed in oral medicine are of a chronic nature and as a result patients may remain on long-term follow-up or may require shared care/follow-up with their referring practitioner.
