Oral Surgery

The Oral Surgery Department treats patients who require dental extractions and other surgical procedures in the mouth. These surgical procedures include the removal of impacted wisdom teeth, placement of dental implants, management of jaw cysts and other types of jaw pathology. Mucosal and soft tissues lesions are also dealt with in this department.

The role of the department is to provide diagnosis and treatment to patients who are referred in by their general dental or medical practitioners, although treatment can be provided to those who attend in pain who are not registered with a dentist.
When a patient is referred to the department they will usually attend a consultation appointment in the first instance to plan treatment accordingly and subsequently attend one or more appointments for surgery.

A one-stop service is available to manage benign soft tissue lesions like polyps. Treatment is delivered mainly under local anaesthetic, however for anxious patients we are able to provide treatment under intravenous sedation where this is deemed appropriate. More complex surgery may also require a general anaesthetic- which can be undertaken at Ninewells, Stracathro or Perth Royal Infirmary.

There are also teaching sessions where patients are treated by undergraduate dental students under direct supervision of clinical lecturing staff.
