Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialist branch of dentistry that is concerned with the alignment of the teeth and jaws, including the correction of dental and facial abnormalities. Orthodontic braces move teeth, within the jaw bone, to straighten them and help them bite evenly together. A rating system known as the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) is used to assess your eligibility for NHS treatment. The NHS Inform Website  contains more information on different grades used to determine the IOTN score and how we allocate NHS orthodontic treatment to patients with the greatest need.  https://www.nhsinform.scot/care-support-and-rights/nhs-services/dental/accessing-orthodontics#:~:text=A%20system%20known%20as%20Index%20of%20Orthodontic%20Treatment,are%20listed%20below.%20Grade%201%3A%20almost%20perfect%20teeth.

What We Do

The Orthodontic Service provided within Dundee Dental Hospital and School varies significantly from that provided within an orthodontic or general practice.

The department focuses on providing advice to a range of practitioners and undertakes treatment of patients with more complex orthodontic problems e.g. severe crowding, impacted teeth, congenitally absent teeth and severe jaw discrepancies.

Most of our patients require input from more than one speciality and we host a number of multidisciplinary clinics with paediatric dentistry, oral surgery, maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry.

We also teach undergraduate dental students and we have a number of postgraduate students that carry out orthodontic treatment under the supervision of a Consultant. We do accept a small number of simpler cases for teaching purposes.

We can usually offer treatment to patients with:
  • Severely crowded teeth
  • Congenitally absent teeth
  • Impacted teeth
  • Additional needs or complex medical problems
  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Severe jaw discrepancies requiring jaw surgery

What We Don’t Do

We are not able to treat patients with:
  • Mild orthodontic problems (unless we need a small number of cases for teaching)
  • Patients with tooth movement due to periodontal disease (gum disease)
  • Active dental disease including poor oral hygiene
  • Very heavily filled teeth
  • Crowding due to relapse following previous orthodontic treatment
