I think my ulcerative colitis is flaring

Top tips!

1. could this be an infection / food poisoning?

if you think this is possible, please collect a specimen pot from your GP surgery and provide a sample

2. if you are confident there is no chance of infection

Increase the dose of your mesalazine tablets (brand names such as Octasa, Asacol, Pentasa, Balsdalazide) to the maximum allowed dose for a 2 week period in the first instance

3. If you continue to deteriorate despite this

call the Advice Line as you may require steroids

4. If you develop diarrhoea during the night and infection has been excluded

it is likely that you require hospital admission and please contact your GP for an emergency appointment

5. If after 2 weeks of full dose mesalazine you have not improved

call the Advice Line as you will likely require steroids and we can arrange a prescription

6. If your symptoms have settled on full dose mesalazine

continue on this larger dose for 6 weeks and if you feel better reduce the dose back down to the previous maintenance dose.
