AI used to support heart failure care

NHS Tayside Innovation has completed the second phase of a Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI), funded by the Chief Scientist Office (CSO), which set the challenge of using artificial intelligence (AI) to develop a heart failure audit tool.

SBRIs offer organisations of any size the opportunity to work directly with the public sector to develop new innovative technologies and processes, with the aim of solving challenges and improving public services.

Red Star, a small company specialising in developing innovative healthcare solutions, developed AI algorithms to extract heart failure data from health boards. NHS Tayside Innovation connected the company with clinicians from NHS Tayside and Forth Valley to ensure that the right data was being identified and a prototype dashboard was co-designed to provide a user-friendly way for clinicians to view the data.

The project successfully demonstrated that AI can be used to extract data and develop an audit tool that does not rely on time consuming manual processes.

This opens up exciting future possibilities for providing timely access to data that could help to support the delivery of heart failure care. It is hoped that the clinicians who have been involved so far will keep up this good work and further explore how an AI driven audit tool and dashboard could be integrated into clinical systems for real world evaluation.
