Routine Antenatal Care and Schedule of Visits

8-10 weeks:  First appointment with Midwife (Blood tests offered).

11-14 weeks:  Dating Scan/Nuchal Translucency.

16 weeks:  Your midwife will give you information about the ultrasound anomaly scan you will be offered at 20 weeks. She will also discuss your blood results.

20 weeks:  Detailed Ultrasound (if you decide to have this scan). The main purpose of this scan is to check that there are no physical abnormalities.

25 weeks:  Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heart beat. She will discuss the importance of the baby’s movements and advise you to book antenatal classes.

28 weeks:  Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heartbeat. You will be offered more blood tests. You will be offered your first anti-D treatment if you are rhesus negative. Whooping cough vaccine will be discussed, this ideally should be given between now and 32 weeks pregnant, but may be given up to 38 weeks of pregnancy.

Your midwife will discuss the importance of talking to your baby and forming a relationship.

31-32 weeks: (First time mums only) Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, a urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby, check the position of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heartbeat. She will review and discuss the results of screening tests undertaken at 28 weeks.

34-36 weeks:  Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, a urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby, check the position of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heartbeat.

She will give you information about preparing for labour and birth, including how to recognise active labour, ways of coping with pain in labour and she will discuss your birth plan with you. She will also discuss perineal massage.

38 weeks:  Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, a urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby, check the position of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heartbeat.

40 weeks:  (First time mums only) Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, a urine test, she will feel your tummy to measure the size of the baby, check the position of the baby and she will listen to your baby’s heartbeat. Your midwife should give you more information about what happens if your pregnancy lasts longer than 41 weeks.

41 weeks:  Your midwife will offer a blood pressure check, urine test, abdominal palpation, listen to the heart beat and check position of the baby. Your midwife will discuss post dates aromatherapy. She may also discuss induction of labour and a membrane sweep may be arranged within the next few days.

42 weeks:  If you have not had your baby by 42 weeks and have chosen not to have an induction you will be offered increased monitoring of the baby including an ultrasound scan.
