NHS Tayside

NHS Tayside is found in the East of Scotland, and incorporates the cities of Dundee and Perth, as well as Angus and Perth and Kinross-shire. The geographical area is quite large and covers a population of approximately 420,000. The Tayside area also includes north east Fife.

The main hospital sites in NHS Tayside are Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Perth Royal Infirmary in Perth and Stracathro Hospital near Brechin. There are also smaller community hospitals and many GP practices.

As well as the local population the Health Board provides some tertiary services for neighbouring Health Boards.

We have almost every medical specialty except for cardiothoracic surgery.

University of Dundee School of Medicine

is based in Ninewells Hospital. The school is one of the highest rated in the UK. NHS Tayside has close links with the medical school and the University. There are plenty of opportunities for Foundation Doctors to get involved in teaching, research and medical education.

Academic FY posts are available for application in Tayside for those interested.

All FYs involved in undergraduate teaching can apply to be Honorary Clinical Fellows (teaching) at the University of Dundee with associated resources. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in medical education.

After completion of Foundation, NHS Tayside has a number of Clinical Teaching Fellow posts available for anyone interested in Medical Education.

Foundation training in Tayside

Foundation rotations in Tayside are often all in Ninewells Hospital. Those that rotate out of Dundee generally only go to Perth, which is a short drive and easily commutable.

There is great camaraderie in the junior doctors mess.

Ninewells is a good size for training. It has many aspects of a tertiary centre whilst maintaining a smaller tight-knit core of juniors/staff, so it remains friendly.

The University of Dundee offers a huge range of staff development sessions on teaching and assessment, so anyone with an interest can learn the best methods for their sessions and get involved. They also get CPD certificates for their portfolio.

The Espresso Lab in the Ian Lowe Centre has great coffee. It also offers really good pizza at lunchtime.

The cafe in the hospital concourse sells cakes and pastries from Fisher & Donaldson such as their fudge donuts
