Recognition and Approval of Trainers
In 2012, the General Medical Council (GMC) issued their guidance for ‘Recognition and Approval of Trainers’.
A process of recognition is in place to protect and enhance the status of training (GMC, 2017) and mirrors the process for General Practitioners with training roles which has been in place for some time.
High quality training is essential to patient care, and the trainer recognition process is in place to make sure that education and training is valued and protected (GMC, 2017).
The trainer recognition process is a key component of the GMC’s regulatory framework designed to provide assurance to patients and others that medical education and training produces doctors with the appropriate knowledge, skills and behaviours.

Support
In order to support you in gathering evidence for the purpose of trainer recognition, there is a one hour interactive workshop. By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
- Explain how those in recognised training roles will be expected to collate a portfolio.
- Describe the purpose of an educator portfolio in terms of quantity, quality and engagement.
- Evaluate the quality of supporting information.
- Identify some pieces of evidence you could supply.
