Hosted Inpatient Services

The key improvements in inpatient services are:
  • Least Restrictive Care: Least Restrictive Care Steering Group developed, Care Leads identified and data collection beginning in Hosted Inpatient Services in November 2018. Utilisation of bean bag restraint introduced and incorporated into local training in January 2019. Leads for Quality Improvement and Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) submitted proposal for revised training and assurance for Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) in August 2019. The Quality Improvement Lead was appointed to the UK Restraint Reduction Network in September 2019 with further work on mapping the current provision of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) in Tayside in November 2019.
  • Trauma: Quality Improvement team initiated meeting with NES for re-introduction of framework in January 2019. Training related to the trauma matrix in inpatients and first steering group meeting including wider stakeholders commenced in August 2019 and Transforming Psychological Trauma Implementation Coordinator appointed in October 2019
  • Improving Observation Practice: IPCU had 95% reduction on hours of observation in December 2018 after being set aim of 50% reduction of hours spent on observations by July 2019. First Improving Observation Practice Steering Group conducted in September 2019 with a collaborative tasked with writing a protocol for final draft in January 2020. The Steering Group is currently developing an implementation plan for the protocol. 17-hours activity pilot commenced in July 2019 in Inpatient wards and discussion and agreement with e-learning team to develop a LearnPro was conducted in November 2019. Improving Observation Practice team win a national award at the NAS forum awards in November 2019
  • Staff Support, Training & Development and Wellbeing: Introduction of Senior Nurses on site through Band 6 induction and Action Learning on psychological safety. Five staff trained by NES as clinical supervision train the trainers. QNPICU review visit from RCPsych and NQP induction and action learning sets and LD-specific NQP Induction all conducted throughout 2019. Planning for implementation of person-centred visiting, workshop arranged for March 2020 with Scottish Government
  • Care Planning: NHS Tayside Mental Health Nursing Standards for person-centred care referenced as area of good practice by the Mental Welfare Commission in September 2019. In November 2019 the Care Planning collaborative won a national award at the Mental Health Nurse forum. The Mental Welfare Commission visit to Moredun Ward in Murray Royal Hospital recognised that there was an improvement in person-centred care planning
