After your initial assessment appointment, your child’s paediatrician may recommend a Griffiths Assessment. This is a detailed, play based, assessment of a child’s development. It is used in children aged 6 years and under. The assessment provides details of how a child is achieving across all areas of development. This can be very helpful when considering, for example, school placements and future support needs. The Griffiths assessment is not required or suitable for all children who attend the child development clinic.
The Griffiths clinics are run with a minimum of 2 doctors. These may not be the same doctors that you and your child have met before. The full assessment usually takes 1.5-2 hours. It is helpful to bring a drink and snack for your child. Gentle encouragement is welcomed but to accurately complete the assessment it is important that the adult who comes with the child does not help them complete tasks. Occasionally it is not possible to complete the assessment in one appointment and your child may be brought back a second time to finish it.
