Radiopharmacy

What is Radiopharmacy?

We use Radiopharmacy in nuclear medicine tests which require the patient to have an injection.

Where is my radioactive medicine prepared?

As most radioactive medicines are administered by intravenous injection, it is crucial that your injection is sterile.  Therefore, your radioactive medicine is prepared by a trained operator working within one of the Radiopharmacy's clean rooms.

The clean room is supplied with filtered air to reduce the chance of particle formation within the clean room.  The operator wears a specially designed suit and works at either a Laminair Flow Cabinet or an Isolator to prepare your radioactive medicine.

What is an Isolator?

An Isolator is essentially a rigid rectangular box with integrated gloves for the operator to insert their arms/hands into.  The Isolator is supplied with filtered air and protects the product being manufactured from the operator and protects the operator from the product being prepared.

Additional Information

As each radioactive medicine is prepared on an individual basis specific for each patient, it is really important that you keep your appointment, otherwise the medicine will go to waste.
