PET CT

PET (Positron Emission Tomography) coupled with Computerised Tomography (CT) scans are offered at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) based within the grounds of Ninewells Hospital.  These types of scans provides your doctor with a complete picture of how the tissues are functioning and identifies if your organs are not working normally.  With a PET-CT scan, the body is imaged following the injection of a tracer (generally a form of radioactive sugar).  This helps your doctor plan the appropriate treatment for you.

How to find us

The Clinical Research Centre (CRC) is located on James Arrott Drive at Ninewells Hospital and has it's own entrance, separate to that of the main hospital entrance.

You will find further information on how to find us here.

Preparation for your PET-CT scan

You should have nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours before your scan with the exception of patients using insulin.  You may drink small amounts of water.  We would ask you to refer to your letter and the leaflet for specific instructions. If you are diabetic it is really important that you refer to the instructions in the leaflet.

How long will the scan take?

It depends on the type of scan, but you should expect to be in the department for between 2 to 3 hours.

When will my results be available?

We will send a report of the scan to your consultant and the results can also be accessed by your GP.
