Respiratory Physiotherapy

Respiratory physiotherapists are part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, specialising in the assessment and treatment of both children and adults with breathing difficulties. We provide expert care across a range of settings including hospital wards, intensive care units, outpatient clinics, and community services.

What do Respiratory Physiotherapists do?

Respiratory physiotherapists can use a range of treatment options including airway clearance techniques, breathing exercises, and rehabilitation programmes.  These are designed to help improve lung function, reduce symptoms such as excess phlegm or shortness of breath, and enhance quality of life.

In addition to this, respiratory physiotherapists are involved in education and prevention of respiratory complications. They support patients who have lung disease in learning self-management strategies, promote early mobilisation following surgery, and contribute to ventilator weaning and critical care recovery. Treatment plans are tailored to each persons needs and are designed to help reduce hospital admissions, shorten recovery times, and encourage patients to take control of their respiratory health.
