Motor Neurone Disease

Testing reflexes with physiotherapist
Following MND diagnosis, you may be referred onto to a specialist neurology physiotherapist if you display any issues with strength or mobility. While physiotherapy cannot improve the muscles weakened by the condition, it can help to strengthen the unaffected muscles which can try to slow the impact of the disease progression.

Some ways Physiotherapy can help include:

Exercise

Trying to keep yourself fit and active into the condition can help to maintain your abilities as long as possible. Your physiotherapist may advise you on specific exercises for unaffected muscles which may help to support the weakened muscles to function.

Walking aids

As the condition progresses, your physiotherapist can provide walking aids to maintain your mobility as long as possible. These can be changed or reviewed as your condition progresses.

Braces and supports

Your Physiotherapist may refer you to the Orthotics service, or provide splints of their own if it may help with your function. Splints can help to support weakened muscles to help you to do more with the unaffected or stronger muscles. This may include ankle splints to correct drop foot, or wrist splints to support wrist drop. Please speak to your physiotherapist or specialist nurse, if you think these may be of benefit.
