Excess Phlegm

Phlegm is mucous produced by the lungs in order to protect the airways from irritants such as dust, pollen or bacteria. Too much phlegm can result in infections, so it is important that you can learn how to manage this yourself.

This short video will explain more.

Simple thinks like staying hydrated, stopping (or cutting down) smoking and remaining active can help you clear the phlegm. This leaflet can give you more information.

Breathing Exercises

The Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) is a simple technique that can help you clear your phlegm more easily. The video below will show you an example of how to do this. Your Physiotherapist may change this slightly to make sure you are getting the most out of the treatment.

You can click on the image below to get written information of the technique

Additional Techniques

Occasionally your physiotherapist may prescribe additional devices to help clear your phlegm.  These are generally only used when the standard breathing techniques are not sufficient.

During your review with your physiotherapist, they will have prescribed a device and provided instructions that are specific to your needs.  If you need a reminder of these, click on the links below to access the videos and leaflets for each device.
