Move Around Safely
Take Your Time When Standing Up
Getting up too quickly can sometimes make you feel dizzy or unsteady.
When getting out of bed or standing from a chair:
- Take your time.
- Sit for a moment before standing.
- Make sure you feel steady before walking.
- Avoid rushing if you feel dizzy or light-headed.
If you regularly experience dizziness or feel faint when standing, speak to your GP or healthcare professional.
Use Your Walking Aid Correctly.
If you have been prescribed or provided with a walking aid, use it as advised.
Try to avoid using furniture, walls or other unstable objects for support when walking.
Keep your walking aid within easy reach, particularly when getting out of bed.
Do not use your walking aid to pull yourself up from a chair or bed unless you have specifically been advised that it is safe to do so. Instead, use the arms of the chair or another stable surface to help you stand.
