Make Your Home Safer

Small changes around your home can help reduce the risk of trips and falls.

Keep Walkways Clear

Try to keep areas where you walk free from:

  • Loose rugs and mats.
  • Trailing cables.
  • Clutter.
  • Low furniture or objects that may be difficult to see.

Make sure that stairs, hallways and other walking areas are kept clear.

Improve Lighting

Good lighting can make it easier to see where you are walking and identify potential hazards.

Consider:

  • Keeping frequently used areas well lit.
  • Using a bedside light or night light.
  • Turning lights on before using stairs.
  • Taking a moment to allow your eyes to adjust when moving between light and dark areas.

Take care In Bathroom

Bathrooms can present an increased risk of slipping.

You may find the following helpful:

  • A non-slip mat in the bath or shower.
  • Securely fitted grab rails.
  • Equipment or adaptations to make washing and bathing safer.

If you are finding it difficult to get in or out of bed, use the toilet, have a shower or bath, or manage other everyday activities, an Occupational Therapist may be able to help.
