Staying Active
Why Is Movement Important?
When you are in pain, it can be tempting to avoid activities that make your symptoms worse. While rest may be helpful for a short period following an injury or flare-up, avoiding movement for too long can lead to reduced strength, stiffness and loss of confidence.
Regular movement and physical activity can help to:
- Maintain strength and flexibility.
- Improve mobility.
- Reduce stiffness.
- Improve fitness.
- Build confidence in movement.
- Support sleep and mood.
- Help you continue with everyday activities.
The best type of activity will depend on your individual circumstances and what you enjoy doing.
Start Small And Build Gradually
If you have become less active because of pain, start with an amount of activity that feels manageable.
You can then gradually increase the amount you do over time.
For example, if you can comfortably walk for five minutes, you could start by doing this regularly before slowly increasing the time or distance.
Try to avoid doing too much on a “good day” and then needing a long period of rest afterwards. A more consistent and gradual approach is often more helpful.
