About us

The Palliative Care Service in Ninewells Hospital is provided by a small team of Medical and Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists.  As well as providing advice and support to patients throughout the hospital, we also have access to three Specialist Palliative Care beds in the Acute Palliative Care Unit in Ninewells Hospital

Where are we based?

We are based on Level 7, South Block, within Ninewells Hospital, Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm.  Palliative Care advice out of hours, at weekends and public holidays is available from Tayside Palliative Care Services.

Aims of the service

If you are having problems with complicated symptoms such as pain or sickness which are part of your illness, the team will work with your doctors, nurses and other health care professionals to give you extra support and specialist advice about how to effectively treat these problems.

We aim to help you cope with your situation in the best way for you and we can help talk through any worries that you or your family might have whilst you are in hospital.  If you wish we can arrange to meet with you and those close to you during visiting times or at a more convenient time.  We can also help to discuss and plan your discharge home.  If you require ongoing care, we may discuss transfer to a specialist palliative care unit such as Roxburghe House or Cornhill, or a community hospital.

If your symptoms are complex, we may discuss moving you to the Acute Palliative Care Unit for a short period of time.  Here you will receive ongoing input by a specialist medical and nursing team to help improve your situation.

If your illness is serious and you are unable to go home, we will work closely with the doctors and nurses in your ward to care for you and those close to you at the end of your life.
