Gestational Diabetes Workstream

The Scottish Government has agreed that it is time to take action to tackle the growing prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) by publishing and providing funding to implement a new framework to prevent T2D developing, detect the condition early, and provide early intervention.1 NHS Tayside is one of three early adopter sites which are leading the way in implementing the Framework.
Tayside has taken a public health transformation and design led approach to identifying the change needed to deliver whole system sustainable change. The Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre (DHI) was commissioned by NHS Tayside to assist with the coproduction of new and improved diabetes services.

This approach involved:
  • Identifying population need including inequalities within current service provision in NHS Tayside.
  • Desk top research identifying digital approaches to type 2 diabetes diagnosis and management.
  • Mapping current service pathways in NHS Tayside.
  • Gathering views of current services from people living with type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
  • Highlighting key issues with current service design in NHS Tayside.
  • Prioritising opportunities for innovation.
  • Identifying key challenges.
  • Developing recommendations for whole system change.
