Rabies

For patients presenting with possible exposure to rabies see Rabies Exposure Pathway for where to refer patients depending on age of patient and time of day.
Typically this is a wound sustained overseas involving contact with an animal but could be contact with a bat in the UK. To refer, either page the on call ID physician in hours via Ninewells main switchboard, or email TAY.id@nhs.scot.
Following assessment and initial management, the ID team will refer directly on to the Tayside Central Vaccination Service for completion of the recommended course of treatment as appropriate.
