Travel Vaccinations

Travel vaccines
If you are planning to travel outside of the UK, it's important to know your travel health needs, including any disease prevention and vaccinations.  You should start planning this as early as possible, preferably at least 8-12 weeks before you are due to travel.  Short notice requests may not be possible to accommodate.

You will find lots of general travel health information on the NHS Scotland website Fit for Travel and it is important that you read through this information first before arranging a travel consultation.
Once you have read through the information on the Fit for Travel website you may require an assessment, advice and vaccinations before you travel.  Your travel health needs will depend on your individual situation and will consider:

  • Your vaccine history
  • Your destination country
  • Your accommodation
  • How long you will stay
  • What you will be doing
  • Your general health

Some vaccinations are available free of charge on the NHS, but there are some you need to pay for.  Non-NHS vaccines and anti-malaria medications are only available from participating community pharmacies or private travel clinics.

NHS Tayside Travel Health Service

NHS Tayside offers NHS travel vaccines through the community vaccination centres. These vaccinations are free of charge because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

• Diphtheria, polio and tetanus (combined booster)
• Hepatitis A
• Typhoid
• Cholera

Please contact tay.travelvaccines@nhs.scot if you require any of these vaccines.  Alternatively you may wish to arrange vaccinations with a community pharmacy or private provider, although these will have a cost.

Community Pharmacy Travel Service

You can access other private travel vaccines and anti malarial medication at a number of community pharmacies across Tayside. Please be aware, if you choose to have any of the four available NHS travel vaccines in a community pharmacy, you will be charged a fee. Please contact a pharmacy directly to enquire whether they offer a travel service.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

Yellow fever vaccination can only be administered at designated centres. You can find centres in Tayside which offer yellow fever vaccination at https://publichealthscotland.scot/our-areas-of-work/immunisation-vaccine-and-preventable-disease/yellow-fever-vaccination-centres/resources-for-the-public/
