On 25 May 2018, the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA2018) came into force in the UK, based on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The DPA2018 and GDPR introduced stricter requirements on how NHS Tayside handles personal data (i.e. information that can be used to identify a living individual, whether directly or indirectly – for example: names, addresses, and CHI numbers).  The introduction of DPA2018 provided NHS Tayside with the opportunity to further strengthen the way personal data is protected.
