Who can I bring with me to my appointment? Does it have to be my parent?

The legal bit: In Scotland young people 16 and over can legally consent to any medical treatment without the consent of their parent.

Children under 16 can also legally consent to medical treatment without the consent of their parent but it is up to the clinician you see at CAMHS to decide whether they feel you are able give consent. That means they need to feel happy that you understand why you have come to CAMHS and that you understand any consequences of any assessment or treatment you have whilst you are here.

The other bit: So, legally you can choose who you bring with you but there’s a bit more to it than that. Often it’s really helpful to have a parent with you or an adult who knows you really well. They often have lots of really important information about how you’re doing and about your history which helps us to decide what help you need plus they are the ones who will support you day to day, so our advice would always be to bring a parent, or an adult you trust and who knows you.
