Hospital Dental Service, Specialist Dental Services working with the School of Dentistry

NHS Tayside and University of Dundee

NHS Tayside and the School of Dentistry, which is part of the University of Dundee, work together to provide training to deliver under-graduate and post-graduate dental education, specialist dental treatment and oral health research. The University of Dundee is one of the UK top three dental schools (2018 Complete University Guide) and is the best place to study Dentistry in Scotland (2017 Guardian University rankings).

Dental students may therefore be present during your consultation and you may also be asked to take part in research studies. These are entirely voluntary and your decision will not affect your treatment.

Dundee Dental School has a YouTube channel with many interesting and useful videos:

Some patients may receive free routine dental treatment within the Dundee Dental Hospital and School if they don’t have a dentist.

Specialist Dental Services at Dundee Dental Hospital

Dundee Dental Hospital & School, home to the University of Dundee's School of Dentistry, is one of only four dental hospitals in Scotland – the Dean’s welcome

Service provision, education and research form key components, with consultant-led dental specialties providing treatment for around 61,000 attendances each year, together with undergraduate and postgraduate training for dental students, dental nurses, dental technicians, dental hygienists and therapists.

The Dental Hospital provides a unique range of dental services for the people of Tayside. It is an integral part of the University of Dundee School of Dentistry and is there to support undergraduate and postgraduate dental education.

If your dentist feels you require the support of a dental specialist, you may be referred for an assessment to Dundee Dental Hospital & School. At the assessment visit, the specialist should be able to agree a treatment plan with you, or refer you for further investigations. The agreed treatment plan will either be sent back to your dentist for completion, or if you fall within one of our priority groups be completed within Dundee Dental Hospital & School.

A referral to Dundee Dental Hospital & School does not automatically entitle you to treatment; you must meet the required referral and acceptance criteria prior to treatment being agreed. It is important for you to discuss this with your dentist at the point of referral.

It is important that you continue to see your dentist for routine dental examinations, treatment and acute care (dental emergencies, usually including those arising from treatment in Dundee Dental Hospital & School). All patients will be referred back to the referring general dental practitioner on completion of treatment for maintenance and revision of the treatment in due course.

There is no cost for the treatment provided within Dundee Dental Hospital and School but there are usually elements of the treatment completed by your own dentist - this may have a cost associated – your dentist will advise you of the costs.
