FY1 Safety Programme

Within your FY1 teaching programme you will receive safety teaching to enable you to keep yourself safe, as well as your patients safe. You will get the opportunity to attend several Morbidity and Mortality meetings as part of this programme to understand how adverse events occur as well as learning from these.

FY1 Curriculum

There are key outcomes required around Safety and QI within the FY1 curriculum.  There are several teaching sessions and recommendations for you to meet your portfolio requirements.

FY Teaching

Keeping patients and FYs safe is one of the teaching sessions to prepare you to understand topics such as: how do you know if your care is safe, safety culture, psychological safety, adverse event reporting, clinical governance.

M&M (Morbidity and Mortality)

M&M teaching is delivered in rotation 2 to give FYs the opportunity to learn from patient deaths from general medical and surgical specialities.

Datix training

It is suggested that you get familiar with the DATIX system in Business systems on Staffnet.  This will allow you to report a range of adverse events.

Clinical Supervisor

You are encouraged to discuss any event you report on DATIX with your Clinical Supervisor to help debrief and share learning from this.

Reflecting

To meet the FY safety portfolio requirements it is recommended that you complete a short written reflection on an adverse event you have reported on DATIX, and upload to your portfolio.
