Who we are

Rabbit & chick Neonatal services
Neonatal services refer to the areas within the hospital and community that provide care to babies born prematurely or sick. The word ‘neonatal’ means newborn period up to the first 28 days of life.
Across Scotland there are 15 units that provide a range of Neonatal Care, from Special Care (Level 1), Local Neonatal Units (Level 2) and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (Level 3) who deliver special care, high-dependency, intensive or surgical care to newborn babies. Together these units form the Scottish Neonatal Network. For more information on what the levels of care mean see https://www.bliss.org.uk/parents/in-hospital/about-neonatal-care/how-does-neonatal-care-work
Ninewells Neonatal Unit is based within the Tayside Children’s Hospital and is part of Ninewells Hospital and Medical School complex in Dundee. Our Neonatal service provides Level 3 care for a population of around 470,000 with 4 ICU cots, 4 HDU cots, 10 SCBU cots and 4 Transitional care cots. We have approx 350-400 admissions to our unit each year and look after a wide range of babies including extremely premature babies to unexpectedly unwell term born babies.
We work closely with our partners across the Scottish Neonatal Network to ensure the highest standard of care for our babies. Sometimes babies are cared for in units that are not local to them or their care is transferred to another unit for more specialist input.
