Transportation of samples

Specimens should be returned or shipped to the laboratory as soon as possible to aid with accurate interpretation of test results.

All diagnostic samples are potentially infectious and so the sender must ensure that samples are packaged safely and correctly labelled for transport to the laboratory:

  • Sample containers must be securely closed
  • Sample containers must be free of visible external contamination
  • Samples should be transported in a sample bag with only one patient’s samples per bag
  • Any outer packaging must be clearly addressed to: Scottish Cutaneous Porphyria Service, Photobiology Unit, Level 8, Ninewells Hospital & Medical School, Dundee, DD1 9SY
  • Samples sent by post must be dispatched in accordance with UN packing instructions PI650 and fully compliant with UN3373 regulations. Please contact the laboratory directly if you require assistance with this
