Housing & Homelessness

You are legally homeless if you have nowhere to live or if it is not safe or reasonable to stay where you are. This includes situations involving domestic abuse, sofa surfing, living in a hostel, overcrowded or unsafe housing, or accommodation that harms your health.

Safe, stable housing is important for both physical and mental wellbeing. Poor or unstable housing can make health problems worse and make it harder to access support. Preventing homelessness early is the most effective approach.

Your local council must help if you are homeless or at risk. They may support you to stay in your current home, help you find somewhere else, or provide temporary accommodation. You can still access healthcare, benefits, banking and voting even without a permanent address.

Free, confidential advice is available from Citizens Advice Scotland (see contact details below). If you are homeless or at risk in the next six months, seek support as soon as possible.

Self-Help -
If you are facing homelessness, contact your local housing authority early and provide any evidence such as an eviction letter. You may also be able to get free legal advice through Legal Aid- Legal Aid- MyGov.Scot.
