Volunteers

All volunteers within NHS Tayside have access to the Standards. Volunteers often have a unique perspective on the work of a ward or service. Their regular presence may mean they become aware of issues which are of concern, and they may be uncertain of how to deal with them. They may also be uncertain about how serious a problem is, or whether it is something they should have any involvement in.

Volunteer Services

NHS Tayside has eight Volunteer Service Areas and volunteers will have access to a Volunteer Manager or Coordinator in one of these areas. Volunteers who have been recruited through an external organisation or charity will have a contact person known to the NHS Tayside Volunteer Service and an agreement will be in place which sets out each party’s responsibilities.

How to raise a concern

If they can, volunteers should raise a concern with their Volunteer Manager or Coordinator first, who will be happy to support them to take things forward or take it forward on their behalf. Volunteers can also raise a concern with one of the other managers where they volunteer. Alternatively, they can contact one of NHS Tayside’s Confidential Contacts.

Volunteers can also contact the INWO advice line on Freephone 0800 008 6112 or email INWO@spso.gov.scot to get advice on the options for raising a concern and general information on support and signposting.

Support

Volunteers who raise concerns will have the same access to support and information that is available to NHS Tayside staff and more details are available on the Support and Further Information page.

Training

Training is available which provides more information about the National Whistleblowing Standards and the role of the INWO. Further details, including how to access the learning modules is available here.
