Following publication of revised national guidance for nursing and midwifery students in relation to Speaking Up, the three local universities (Dundee, Abertay, Fife) and NHS Tayside worked together to develop a local process route to support a shared and consistent approach. Student representatives have been key members of the group that developed this.
The process map sets out routes for supporting and responding to concerns related to patient safety, as well as those associated with educational experience. It also considers the different settings/routes through which a student may voice a concern.
Key within this is a tripartite approach between university, practice education and operational management both in terms of student support and immediate risk assessment, as well as discussions and assessments as to relevant policy, process/business as usual.
The flowchart/process is designed to complement the refreshed National guidance for students which has been ratified recently.
Students and Trainees
Students, trainees, and anyone on apprenticeships and internships working and/or studying within NHS Tayside have access to the Standards for raising concerns about NHS service delivery.
During their training, most students will be informed of what whistleblowing means and how raising concerns provides an important mechanism for service improvements. Some will also be informed of the duty they will have to raise concerns, once they are registered professionals. Their confidence in putting this into practice will vary, depending on a range of factors, including their previous placements and the culture they experience around them where they are working.
